Restaurant Shiki sits in the corner of Norwich’s Tombland; it’s exterior generally missed by passers-by, which is a real shame, as it’s one of the finest restaurants the city has to offer. Shiki’s reputation lies with its excellent sushi dishes, however the range and depth of their menu caters for an extensive celebration of Japanese cuisine as a whole. In particular the Teppanyaki (a form of cooking performed in front of the diner using an iron griddle) offers an exciting blend of spectacle and well-prepared food. Certainly it’s hard to deny that there is something compulsive about sitting in front of the rapid-fire chef, if a little terrifying when he starts performing tricks with both the food and utensils. If you’ve never had the opportunity to witness a Teppanyaki chef at work then Shiki offers an incredibly intimate environment in which to do so. With superb food and exceptional service, the only minor gripe with the whole experience is that at roughly £20 a head Shiki is a little out of the student price range. That said, they offer a good deal with all-you-can-eat Sushi on Mondays and Tuesdays – and there’s no reason not to treat yourself once in a while!
