I went to watch 'Looking for Eric' with an open mind. My better half is a massive Manchester United fan and an even bigger Eric Cantona fan, so I was pretty sure this film would keep him entertained - but would it float my boat (a girlie girl whose favourite films include The devil wears Prada and Pretty Woman). I was pleasantly surprised…

Looking For Eric was a great tale of Eric Bishop, a middle-aged man (played by TV actor Steve Evets) who had lost his way in life. His wife has left him with two stepsons who are both off the rails, his house is a mess, his clothes are a mess and he has now managed to make a mess of his job as a postman after his friends from work discover all the undelivered mail that had been building up.

How was he ever going to impress his one true love Lilly (newcomer Stephanie Bishop) the woman he left with his child when he was just 21. But while his world slipped through his fingers Lilly had remained just as beautiful as he had remembered, and with his daughter now wanting them to meet again to take care of their granddaughter he sinks deeper into despair.

Eric turns to a spliff for a release and, whilst in his room staring at a huge poster of his Manchester United hero Eric Cantona, he asks himself 'when was the last time you were happy?' it flashes back to some of Cantona’s finest goals and reminds everyone in the cinema why he was and still is one of the best loved footballers! And as if by magic (or by a now full joint) Cantona appears before him!

This continues every nite resulting in comedy as the Frenchman dispenses life-enhancing aphorisms to get the postman back on track. Before he knows it he is out running with Cantona on the Canal and cleaning out the house!

The middle of the film definitely changes pace when he discovers his oldest wayward stepson is in debt to a local gangster; having shot a teenager in a nightclub for insulting him the gangster makes his son hide the gun under his floor boards in his bedroom! How is he going to solve this setback?

Directed by celebrated British realist filmmaker Ken Loach (Kes), Looking for Eric is a little bit of a departure for him, although it maintains his usual subtlety and humanism. This film is definitely one of two halves that could make you laugh and cry!
