MD: You just launched your album Ourknife, Yourback with NROne. How has that been received?

Brownies: Well technically it's not out yet (if we want to get all pedantic on your ass!), but the feedback so far has been amazing. We've got a gggreat review in this month’s Artrocker, and we've got a gorgeous feature in (the last ever) Plan b. We've also been played/whored all over the radio including Xfm, Radio 1, Future Radio, Dandelion, and some high class Spanish airwaves! Other than that, everyone loves it, including us!

MD: How does this record compare to your previous releases?

Brownies: Well this is definitely the sound that we've been most pleased with so far, recordings wise. However, we did get single of the week in the guardian for 'means to an end' (our first single) so the feedback for that was really positive too. This is our longest release so far (its an alBUM), and I think our live energy is portrayed and sustained really well on Ourknife Yourback. We've all worked really hard on the album (including Kingsley "the don" Harris), so it’s really nice to finally release it and get any feedback at all. I think the album is faster, more relentless, and a lot sexier than anything we have released before. In our opinion, it’s the bestest thing we've ever released, ever.

MD: Was getting single of the week in The Guardian a surprise. Has it helped a lot?

Brownies: No, it wasn’t a surprise, because we thought it was MEGAcool! No, not really, we were super psyched! It’s probably the biggest surprise we've had, because at that time, we were basically nothing! We loved what we were doing, but we kind of felt that noone really got us back then. NROne started the wheel turning in the brown belief, and then the Guardian thing just helped us out onto bigger and better things really. Everything that we do and get is essential in building up our profile and building ourselves up, as individuals, and as a band.

MD: Are you looking forward to playing Hot City Sounds?

Brownies: HELL YES! It was super fun last year, and we're playing with some well good bands! Annd as well as playing our gig on the 10th, we love to go to all the other gigs at the festival... the line up is amazing this year.

MD: How was your experience of playing at the great Escape Festival in Brighton recently?

Brownies: It was actually amazing. We had a really good slot (we were supported by pulled apart by horses...haha) yeah, it’s such a good event and it was nice to be involved by our friends at Artrocker.

MD: Who writes the majority of the songs and where does the inspiration come from?

Brownies: We all write our songs. Someone usually comes up with an idea, and then we all work on it, creating the final product; a hybrid of influences, musical and not. The inspiration for the lyrics mostly comes from sophie’s vagina. Music wise, we are influenced by lots and lots and lots and lots. To make this easier, I will tell you member by member which bands we are most inspired by. Mike: Death from Above, Foals and Nirvana. Stevie: Be Your Own Pet, Kings of Leon, Pixies. Maxie: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Distillers, The Beach Boys. Sophie: Eagles of Death Metal, Future of the Left. Nathan: Nirvana, Aphex Twin, High Contrast and Phillip Glass.

MD: You have a pretty busy schedule coming up. What are you really looking forward to?

Brownies: EVERYTHING! We have been looking forward to our first EVER tour for ages, so its fun to finally experience that. It's weird with being in a band, because you can never really anticipate how things are going to turn out. A good gig is determined after it takes place, so you never really know. We try to treat every gig the same, although Mike’s cynicism usually gets in the way!

MD: Were any of the band ever in the Brownie movement - if so how has that experience shaped your music?

Brownies: Yessss! All of the girls were. Sophie went to brownie camp where she had some life changing experiences involving horses and girls. Maxie and Stevie got their first aid badge there and played that game where you have to eat chocolate with knives and forks. I’m sure that has shaped our music somewhere along the line, but Mike and Nathan’s questionable scouts experiences with a dodgy PE teacher have had a bigger, more substantial, and lasting effect on our music.
