After seeing this band many times in the past, I was very interested to finally see them again. After a few years’ hiatus, The Waxing Captors are back to play a few shows over the festive holiday and tonight did not disappoint. Playing to a half packed room, The Captors opened up with a flurry of pounding drums, grinding power-chords and dissonant keyboards. “File under Pop/Rock” began the set. An old favorite that the crowd automatically recognized, with infectious catchy melodies on a keyboard, which Jack Rundell follows with a chorus of “oohs” and “aahs”. It immediately has the crowd’s heads bobbing and the floor boards shaking. Their front-man, Luke Littleboy, throws himself about the venue, from the stage and into the middle of the crowd, leaving a trail of microphone lead behind him. His voice and idiosyncrasies are that of Jello Biafra in his prime, rolling about on the floor and wailing into the microphone. The set doesn’t slow down for the whole duration. Song after song is filled with energy as the band leap and bound about the venue, creating some of the strangest sounds with their instruments. They close with their interpretation of E. C. Perrow’s “Shortening Bread” that whips the audience in to a frenzy of flailing limbs and spilt drinks.

The Waxing Captors: A Punk Rock Cacophony (in the best way).
