When the French New Wave exploded onto cinema screens around the world in the 60s it not only rewrote the rules of cinema, but demonstrated without a doubt how stylish those Parisians were. With their penchant for fifties American gangster chic Jean Paul Belmondo (Breathless) and Alain Delon (Le Samarai) embodied the definition of cool to a whole generation of impressionable English youths.
